Smiles by Design offers smile alignment solutions for our patients in Scottsdale, Arizona, and the surrounding communities who seek to straighten their smile. Dr. Zana Alnaquib provides two treatment systems, Invisalign® and Six Month Smiles®.

Invisalign works like braces while using clear plastic aligners that are removable for eating and cleaning. These custom, computer-generated aligners are created in a series which are worn for about two weeks, as they incrementally align the teeth until they are fully aligned to specifications.

With Six Month Smiles, you wear brackets and wires for a short amount of time, typically six months to straighten teeth quickly. While they come in clear brackets and tooth-colored wires, they are nearly as discreet as wearing aligners!

While you are aligning your teeth, it is vital to maintain excellent oral hygiene to keep tooth decay and gum disease away. With aligners, cleaning is as simple as brushing and flossing your pearly whites. With wires and brackets, however, you want to make sure you keep food particles and plaque away and to avoid damage to tooth enamel.

Today we would like to share just a few tips on keeping your teeth in pristine condition while aligning your smile:

— If you have elastics, be sure to remove them before you begin cleaning your teeth.

— Brush your teeth by holding the brush at a 45-degree angle against your gums and gently clean the gum line using tiny circular strokes. Fluoride toothpaste is recommended as it helps your teeth resist acids from food and drinks, as well as replacing minerals. You can use a soft-bristled toothbrush.

— Next, brush each tooth gently, along with the braces. You do want to thoroughly clean the gaps between the wire and each tooth, as well as under the wires. Patients have found a powered toothbrush effective, instead of a manual one.

— Make sure to clean the inside and outside surface areas of each tooth, and remember to use circular strokes as you go. With the molars, you can brush back and forth.

— Be sure to floss your teeth as well, and oral irrigators can be a great aid to flossing thoroughly.

— When you have finished cleaning your pearly whites, replace your elastic.

And there you have it, caring for your smile is always important, especially while aligning your smile. Avoid acidic foods and beverages that can harm your teeth and hard foods and sticky foods that can harm your brackets and wires. This means no gum or ice chewing!
