As you may already know, April is oral cancer awareness month, and our Smiles by Design team wants to do all we can to help you know more about the disease so you can keep your oral health in tip-top shape.

Oral cancer in Scottsdale, Arizona, is a serious and dangerous disease that should not be ignored. In fact, it should be prevented at all costs. If you don’t prevent the disease or treat it at the early stages of development, it could result in your smile destruction or even your death. So, to help you keep this disease away from your oral cavity, Dr. Zana Alnaqib recommends doing the following things:

-Don’t smoke or use any tobacco products. We also ask you to drink alcohol in moderation. Binge drinking will dramatically increase your chances of developing oral cancer.

-Maintain a well-balanced diet. Doing so will prevent oral cancer as well as keep your entire health in tip-top shape.

-Try to limit your exposure to the sun. Being out in the sun can increase your chances of developing oral cancer on your lips. If you do need to be in the sun, please put sunblock on your skin and lips.

In order to identify the disease at the early stages, we recommend doing these things:

-Conduct a self-exam at least once a month: Closely examine your oral tissues with a mirror and bright light. Feel around inside your mouth and check for any oral cancer signs. It’s important to focus on examining your gums, lips, cheeks, tongue, and roof of your mouth. We also recommend feeling your neck for lumps or enlarged lymph nodes as well as checking the back of your throat.

-Visit your dentist regularly: When you visit your dentist for your dental cleanings and exams, you will also receive an oral cancer screening, which will allow your dentist to thoroughly examine your entire oral cavity for any oral cancer signs. This is beneficial because oftentimes the self-exams are not enough to identify the small, hidden symptoms.
